We shall start with the Hobbits,
"Hobbits really are amazing creatures, as I have said before. You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you at a pinch."
—The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, Book I, Chapter 2: "The Shadow of the Past"

You have Samwise The Brave, the best friend anyone could ever ask to have. He would never leave you, his excuse it Gandalf told him to stay, but he is staying because he loves you and believes in you. He changes your definition of true friendship, true love, he is everything good in this world that can be hoped for.

You only need to hear some quotes of his to see what a wonderful hobbit he is.
Sam: [Both are overcome by exhaustion] Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?
Frodo: No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food... nor the sound of water... nor the touch of grass. I'm... naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil... between me... and the wheel of fire! I can see him... with my waking eyes!
Sam: Then let us be rid of it... once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!
Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

Sam was the sweetest innocent thing back in the Shire. He loved Rosie but was too shy to do anything about it, he was Frodo's gardener and one of his best friends. When he goes on the quest he really isn't sure whats happening, all he knows is that he has to look out after Frodo, and he does. He risks his life for Frodo so many times and he never asks for anything in return, he just wants Frodo and himself back and safe in the shire again. He grows up so much, and in the end he is stronger and braver than anyone ever could have imagined.
